An Interview with Richard Kane Ferguson
Q: Can you tell us about your journey into the world of fantasy art? What inspired you to pursue this path?
rk post: I had a professor in college who was doing this sort of thing…and honestly, although I had fun doing this kind of work, I didn’t think there was a career in it.
Q: What does your creative process look like? How do you approach a new project from concept to completion?
rk post: It’s changed a bit over the years but it is still pretty similar. Rough out what you want to do and refine it with iterations. Get a final sketch and submit it for approvals. After that, paint…and paint fast.
Q: Do you have a favorite piece or project that you’ve worked on? What makes it stand out for you?
rk post: I like the MtG piece Unmask the most. It just came together, more or less, the way I saw it in my head. Things shift and change as you work on them and compromises are made. This one didn’t have many.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career as an artist, and how did you overcome them?
rk post: What most people face, paying bills. Freelancing is terrible for that and is a lot worse. The rates have not gone up in 30 years. I worked on becoming a brand and make products that I can retail.
Q: Who are some of your biggest influences in the art world, and how have they impacted your work?
rk post: For pen and ink, I would put it to Franklin Booth, Bernie Wrightson, and Virgil Finlay…I have always tried emulating their line weight and subtle shifts from light to dark. Painting, I love turn-of-the-century illustration like NC Wyeth and Arthur Rackham…from the painterly to the illustrative.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring artists who want to break into the fantasy art industry?
rk post: Have a backup. Hahahaha.
Q: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re particularly excited about?
rk post: I have my online retail presence and always try to refine and make everything better. I travel way too much and keep working to improve and streamline that. As for freelance art, there are new Magic: the Gathering pieces coming very soon.
Q: How has your artistic style evolved over the years, and what factors have influenced these changes?
rk post: I would say with work everything is destined to change and improve. You figure things out. But also in the same token, you forget about things…like there may have been a wonderful approach you had to something, moved on, and never explored it further.
Q: How has technology impacted your work as an artist? Do you prefer traditional methods, digital, or a mix of both?
rk post: I utilize a mix of both. Traditional sketching and pen and ink, then use the digital to clean it up and use it for publication. With paintings, I will do a digital underpainting with a traditional sketch underneath, print it out, seal it in an acrylic medium on board, and finish it with oils.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of your art? Any hobbies or interests that might surprise your fans?
rk post: I have a family and just spending time with them is plenty. Otherwise, doing what I do is a lot of work and time-consuming.
Q: Are there any Easter eggs or hidden details in your Magic card art that fans might not be aware of?
rk post: Nothing crazy. There are a few pieces that were published after being altered and the story behind them is something of a story. Like Avatar of Discord was originally a painting for Fallen Angel and a lot of the elements are still there.
This article provides a glimpse into the world of Richard Kane Ferguson, highlighting his journey, creative process, and the impact of his work on the fantasy art community. Whether you’re a fan of Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, or simply appreciate stunning artwork, rk post’s creations are sure to captivate and inspire.

Fantasy World Souls

Anderson Camilato do Nascimento is the developer behind the game Fantasy World Souls1. This game is an MMORPG that combines elements of classic JRPGs and monster training games, featuring over 400 heroes to collect and real-time cooperative battles

Fantasy World Souls is an MMORPG that blends elements of classic JRPGs and monster training games. The game is set in a richly detailed fantasy world where players can embark on epic quests, collect and train a variety of heroes, and engage in real-time cooperative battles.

What inspired you to create Fantasy World Souls?
-Ever since I was a kid, I've had contact with games made on the Super Nintendo, and that's how I got to know my first RPGs.
The ones that fascinated me the most were Pokemon and Final Fantasy.
I always had a dream of making a Final Fantasy-style game (side battle) with monster training, yes, I always wanted to play with those Final Fantasy monsters in the group :)
Unfortunately I haven't found a game of this type yet, that's why I decided to do this.

Can you walk us through the development process of the game?
-The game was made in rpg maker mz (which is made in javascript)
I never really expected people to like my games, but when I decided to publish the first version it went very well, and I noticed that a lot of people started to like it.
After a long time I found a way to make the game multiplayer and I liked it a lot, but there were a lot of bugs.
I don't have much experience with javascript outside of rpg maker and so I was very limited to fixing these bugs.

But because I was starting to earn a little money, I decided to hire a programmer (who has been doing this for over a year), and he made a new server from scratch, and so far it has only improved.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during development?
-Many bugs that were difficult to solve.
There were many moments when I didn't think even a programmer could solve them.

How did you decide on the art style and overall aesthetic of the game?
-At first I just wanted to use the rpg maker assets, because I didn't have the money to invest, so I always used rpg maker, until I decided to change little by little.
The game now has 1 artist and a lot of standard rpg maker stuff is being removed.
Over time I intend to remove all the standard rpg maker assets.

What systems or tools did you use to create the game?
-RPG Maker MZ

Can you tell us more about the storyline and the world of Fantasy World Souls?
-The story was based a little on the Bible, a little on Final Fantasy and a little on my own mind.
Putting it all together resulted in the story of a celestial sphere that broke into several when it entered the material world. Each sphere has its own power that is guaranteed to the one who touched it.
The protagonist, Alex, touched one of them and received the power to see visions.
With this power he can see the Elder who would be his mentor.
So the journey begins with Alex going to collect these spheres, but the power of evil is also at play, with the same purpose of gathering them.

What makes Fantasy World Souls unique compared to other MMORPGs?
-I've never seen a 2D game with side battles like the old Final Fantasy games (I - VI), with monster training and real-time cooperative battles. Maybe that's the difference.

How did you come up with the idea of having over 400 heroes to collect?
-The idea behind this large number of monsters is so that each player can train different monsters.
If there are too few monsters, other players might feel a bit discouraged.
If I'm happy to get a monster knowing that another player already has it can be a bit sad.

What are some of your favorite characters or elements in the game?
-The real-time cooperative mode and the system for evolving your Souls, which can change color with each evolution.
This gives players a much wider range of exclusivity.

How do you balance the gameplay to ensure it’s challenging but fair?
-Balancing is a bit dynamic, sometimes I change it depending on player feedback.

What trends in the gaming industry do you find most exciting right now?
always found this very interesting and it really brings players together around the world.”
It sounds like you’re a fan of games that combine monster training with multiplayer elements. Games like Pokémon, Monster Hunter, and Temtem might be right up your alley. Do you have any favorites?

How do you stay updated with the latest developments in game design and technology?
-I follow with the help of videos on the internet, GPT Chat and also by talking to people who understand the subject.

What advice would you give to aspiring game developers?
-Don't give up on your project because of criticism, and listen well to constructive criticism, but don't let it take over everything, as players have many different opinions. Learn to filter.

Are there any future projects or updates for Fantasy World Souls that you can share with us?
-I have no plans to start a new project, I want to continue with the FWS and frequently add updates.
The next big update I want to add to the game is the Arena (PVP).

How do you see the future of MMORPGs evolving, and where do you see Fantasy World Souls fitting into that future?
-I don't want to compete with any other game, I just want to bring fun and nostalgia to everyone.
Maybe my MMO will never be as visible as those big ones, but I'm not worried about that.

What games or developers have influenced your work the most?
-No developer has influenced me, just a few games like:
Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Digimon, Persona.

What do you enjoy most about being a game developer?
-The chance to show the world my childhood dream.

How do you handle feedback and criticism from players?
-Sometimes I'm fine with it, I'm grateful, other times I just say it's not possible.

What has been the most rewarding moment in your career so far?
-The affection of the players in my favor, and also more than 90% of the reviews being positive.

If you could collaborate with any other game developer or studio, who would it be and why?
-I don't know much about other studios and developers.
But maybe in the future we can form some kind of partnership.
